Very good post, with which I agree wholeheartedly. But how do you feel about autism/Asperger's charities? I have received a number of requests to support Asperger's charities, and I'm not sure how to react. None of the Asperger's/autistics I know would consider themselves charity cases, and I'm not sure how a charity could help anyway. What's your opinion? Genuinely curious.

Well, here’s the thing: The necessity of a charity for autism depends, I think, on where that charity is located and what it’s trying to do.

In the US, where social support structures are absolute crap, charities are often an unfortunate necessity. They are an opportunity to raise money, support and awareness so that autistics of all ages can get what they need out of society to make life more comfortable.

That’s part of what makes Autism $peaks such a crappy charity. It focuses on things like cures, which have very little relevance to the daily life of any autistic. When I see cases where, for example, a mother kills her autistic child because she can’t afford the special schooling he needs, I hold Autism $peaks doubly responsible. Their fearmongering and misinformation is bad enough, but as a charity, this is what they should be doing: Giving support so things like that don’t happen, and raising awareness of why society should change so there’s more support built into it.

They’re such a big charity that their Light it up Blue campaign is worldwide, and yet, why don’t they have funding programs to help autistic people get the kind of education, health and career help they need? Why don’t they run ads and make videos about how social security and universal healthcare are necessary infrastructure to help autistics (and all people) live happier, healthier lives? They could do that, and a good charity would do such things.

I guess what I’m saying is, having a charity for something doesn’t necessarily make that something a “charity case.” Rather, it can potentially be a force for change in the world, doing its part to help make the world a less harsh, inflexible place for autistics, and showing others why they should do the same. Such charities would definitely be worthwhile, and I can’t imagine most of us would be offended by them.

[Defeat Autism Now!
Relax! I’m not a boss monster in a JRPG!]
But if I was, I’d be load-bearing, and you’d have 30 seconds to escape the extremely large, labyrinthine building you found me at the center of.
Seriously, of all the autism groups that teamed up to form Autism $peaks, Defeat Autism Now! has always been the one with the name that creeps me out the most. Not cure, not treat, defeat, as if autism is some hulking boss monster in a JRPG (Japanese role-playing game, for those of you not in the know). It’s spine-shivering hyperbole of Orwellian proportions.
The implications terrify me. The idea that who I am, that something integral to my very personality, is a thing that needs defeating, is staggering. Autism is not a disease. Despite the ableist fucks who compare it to cancer, AIDS and cystic fibrosis, it’s not an illness; it’s simply a difference. The idea that differences need to be erased and defeated…that is the nightmarish rhetoric from which the most horrific dystopias are born. And right now, entire groups of people are out there pushing for one.
Much scarier than any boss monster I ever faced down.

I'm so mad. As I was driving home this morning, I saw a van that had written all over it, in blue paint, Autism Speaks propaganda and stuff about autism awareness month, and getting "justice" for their 6-year-old son. The buzzwords they used made it obvious that these people drank the friggin' kool aid. I felt like I got a momentary glimpse at someone allowing their own son's future to be compromised in the name of self-martyrhood. I wish I could have helped the kid somehow.

…justice!?

What even…justice!? Justice from what? How? I just…I do not get allistic people sometimes, I really don’t.

I don’t blame you for being mad. And I understand wanting to help their kid. Though frankly, I admire your self-restraint. I’m not sure I’d have been able to resist the urge to get out of my car and take my keys to the sides of the Eugenicsmobile. Maybe find something sufficiently sharp to take out the tires.

More on Angry Autistics April (also my inbox ahhhhh!)

So to clarify: I know there are people already doing things for April. That’s great! Want me to signal boost it? Just give me a heads up. Want me to reblog a post you’ve written or art you’ve done? Let me know, and I’ll do it. AH has over 500 followers now (I don’t like to talk about this, it makes me uncomfortable) and some of them may not follow some of (or any of) the autism tags. If you’ve started a tag for your project, I can also signal boost that here.

We are, after all, all in this together.

But here at AH is also where the barbs comes out. That’s why I created it, after all. Thus, got something that makes you angry and want to turn it into a hedgehog meme? Awesome! You can even send me the text if you want and I can make the meme itself for you.

Want to write something? Rant about anti-vaxxers, Autism $peaks, Simon Baron-Cohen, the inane things your mom says about your autism, etc. etc.? Cool! If you want, you can submit them here for April. Especially if you’d like to write something but don’t want to deal with people bugging you about it or friends or family finding out about it–just let me know and I can post it anonymously for you. (And if your anon article gets any anon hate, I can give them a verbal beatdown for you. Or just delete it. Your choice.)

Several years back, when I was still on Twitter, I encountered a woman who wanted to do something for Autism Awareness Month. Being autistic myself, I offered to be interviewed. She seemed to think this was a great idea and was very eager–and then I heard nothing from her again. Not a single word. Not even a “sorry, life happened, don’t have the time now” sort of message. Nada.

I’ve been frustrated ever since with how much “Autism Awareness Month” has nothing to do with actual autistics and I know I’m not the only one who feels that frustration. So I want to gather up our expressions of that frustration–from the “speak softly and carry a big stick” variety, to the mildly annoyed, to the pissed as all fucking hell–here, on AH. I’ve already seen quite a few different plans people have. My hope is not only to have my own content, but to keep track of what else is going on, and thus help others keep track.

Hopefully that makes my intentions clearer.

(And I know there is stuff in my inbox! What else is new? It’s sitting there mainly because it’s stuff I have to think carefully about, and sometimes that can take a long time. My apologies, I will get to it.)

So, Who’s Up for Angry Autistics April?

Just a thought I’ve been having, about countering the influx of fuckery that people have the nerve to call “autism awareness” with a bit of crankiness and spikes.

I’d love to have not just hedgehog memes, but articles, art, whatever people would like to submit, dealing in what this form of “autism awareness” actually does to us. What do y'all think? Does anyone have anything they’d like to submit to such a project?

It’s all well and good to promote autism acceptance, and I’m down with that, but I think we also need to fight back against the stigma that organizations like A$ perpetuate with their Autism Awareness Month and their Light it Up Blue shit. Anyone with me?
